Low-Slope Porch Roof Replacement with TPO System
April 3, 2026
This project began when a homeowner in Vanceboro was referred to us after experiencing ongoing roof leaks on a recently constructed back porch addition. The porch had been built only a few months prior, but the homeowner reported that the roof had been leaking almost from the beginning. After dealing with the issue for about three months and receiving only temporary patch attempts, they decided it was time for a proper roof replacement to permanently solve the problem.
We inspected the roof the day after the homeowner contacted us and quickly identified the root of the issue. The porch roof had an extremely low slope of approximately 1/12, yet it had been installed with traditional asphalt shingles. Asphalt shingles are not designed to perform on roof pitches this low, which was the primary cause of the ongoing leaks. In addition, roof cement had been applied in an attempt to stop the leaks, but this was only acting as a temporary patch rather than a true solution.
After explaining the issue to the homeowner, we provided an estimate for a TPO membrane roofing system, which is specifically designed for flat and low-slope roof applications. TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) is a durable, waterproof membrane system that provides a continuous barrier against water intrusion, making it the ideal choice for roofs with minimal pitch.
Once the project was approved, our team moved quickly. Within six days we removed the failing asphalt shingle system and inspected the underlying structure. During the tear-off, we discovered areas of water-damaged roof sheathing, which were replaced to restore a solid and reliable roof deck. After repairs were completed, we installed a fully adhered TPO membrane roofing system, ensuring a watertight and long-lasting solution for the porch roof.
To complete the installation, we installed 24-gauge metal edge trim around the perimeter of the roof. This provides additional durability, proper edge protection for the membrane system, and a clean finished appearance.
In just under two weeks from the initial phone call, this Vanceboro homeowner went from dealing with persistent leaks to having a properly designed roof replacement built specifically for their low-slope porch roof. This project is a great example of how using the correct roofing material for the roof’s pitch is critical to long-term performance and preventing water intrusion.
